Bentley Burnout, Arnage Carnage

One might associate a Bentley with, say...caviar and filet mignon. But donuts? Heavens, no!

Well, this is what happens when the nouveau riche get their hands on the motor carriages that rightfully belong to the aristocracy.

Seriously though, as posh as it is, and as much heritage as its Winged-B badge might confer, the Bentley Arnage is, after all, just a big old sedan with a monster V8 pumping out torque by the ton through the rear wheels. So here's a bunch of guys who saw through the clout, put 1 and 2 together, and decided to take their big, six-figure limo to the local parking lot for some good old fashioned donuts. There's something refreshingly brutal about that.

Steam-powered cars battle

Steam. As a power source, it's not really been in vogue since, well, the 1800s. But, proving that if you stick with something long enough it'll come back into fashion, steam might just be making a comeback.

This sleek 'n' shiny specimen is the Inspiration, a British-built car that's aiming to break the land speed record for a steam-powered vehicle.

Designed by Glenn Bowsher, who has already been involved in the Thrust 2 and Thrust SSC speed record attempts, the Inspiration is built from aluminium and carbon composites on a tubular steel frame.

It's all powered by a two-stage LPG-fired turbine, which is fed by four boilers. This gives an output in the region of 325bhp, which admittedly looks a touch weedy alongside the estimated 100,000bhp of the Thrust SSC.

This shouldn't be a problem, though, because the British steam car isn't trying to crack 700mph. The world record for the kilometre is just 121mph - set way back in 1906 - while the quickest steam-powered mile was recorded at 145.6mph in 1970.

Top Gear wishes the best of British luck to our brave steam-powered entrepreneurs. Next week, we attempt to break the world record for fastest flying kilometre on a pony and trap.
