Ford To Extend Clearance Sale, GM Upgrades Truck Deals

Ford Motor Co. said Monday it would extend its 2007 model year clearance sale through Aug. 31 and General Motors Corp. said it will enhance deals on 2007 full-size pickup trucks through July 31 as both auto makers look to boost retail sales.

Ford is looking to increase the momentum on retail sales it saw in June, while GM is re-adjusting its incentives after posting a surprising 21% decline in June sales.

GM's incentive spending was down by an average of $700 a vehicle in June and the auto maker's sales manager said last week he was surprised at the level of June incentive spending by competitors, specifically Toyota Motor Corp.

GM will offer either up to $2,000 in cash or reduced financing rates, including 0% for 36 months, on its 2007 full-size pickup trucks in the north- central and northeast regions. Customers in the south-central, southeast and western regions can receive either $1,500 in cash or reduced financing, including 3.9% for 36 months.

On extended and crew cab versions of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, GM is offering either up to $2,000 in cash or reduced financing, including 0% for 36 months, in all regions. California customers can get 0% financing for 60 months.

In GM's deals, customers cannot stack cash with the reduced financing.

GM also is enhancing its lease pull-ahead deals with up to 6 months waived for current GMC Envoy, Chevrolet TrailBlazer, Buick Rainier, Chevrolet Equinox and Pontiac Torrent contracts if the customer buys or leases a 2007 model year TrailBlazer, Envoy or Rainier through GMAC.

For the past 18 months, GM has worked to lessen its reliance on incentives, such as discounts and low financing programs in order to boost its profitability and improve the resale value of its new vehicles.

But GM sales manager Paul Ballew said last week that the auto maker would evaluate its discounts on trucks after a down June and competitors "flailing away" on incentive spending. Toyota was offering 0% financing for 60 months or more than $3,000 in discounts on its new Tundra pickup truck.

Despite the adjustment, GM said it will stick to its incentive strategy and use targeted, tactical deals.

Ford's new deal, which originally was scheduled to end Monday, offers 0% financing for 36 months on all 2007 Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles.

Buyers of 2007 Ford, Lincoln and Mercury trucks and SUVs also will receive an additional $2,007 in bonus cash. The bonus cash offer doesn't apply to the Ford Edge, Freestyle E-series vans or the Lincoln MKX.

The move comes as Ford reported an 8.1% decline in June U.S. sales from a year ago due to a decline in fleet sales, most notably to car rental companies.

Sales of trucks, its most profitable vehicles, were up 2.9% in June, though car sales were down 25%. Overall, retail sales for Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles were up in June for the first time since October 2006.

"The model year clearance event has generate a lot of excitement and we're extending it to continue the momentum even further," said spokeswoman Lydia Cisaruk.

Stabilizing its retail market share is a key part of Ford's turnaround plan. Faced with heavy losses in North America, the auto maker has been idling plants and offering buyouts to thousands of workers.

In late trading Ford shares were unchanged from the Monday close of $9.08, down 3 cents, on volume of 53 million compared with average daily volume of 38.7 million.

Shares of GM were unchanged in late trading from Monday's close of $36.77, up 28 cents on volume of 15.3 million.

Discounts: GM rolls out new incentives

Automaker says it will extend perks until the end of July, including zero-percent financing on pickup trucks.

General Motors Corp said Monday it is extending a range of sales incentives including zero-percent finance offers on pickup trucks starting Tuesday and running through the rest of July.

GM, which reported a 24-percent drop in U.S. sales in June, said dealers will be notified of the new incentive program Monday evening.

The sale offers also include some subsidies for existing GM lease customers trading in older vehicles for 2007 models, including the Envoy and Rainier, the automaker said.

Ford teams up to test plug-in hybrids

Auto manufacturer and utility Southern California Edison will work together to test up to 20 rechargeable vehicles.

Ford Motor Co said Monday it would test a fleet of rechargeable hybrids with utility Southern California Edison in a partnership that environmental advocates said underscores the growing interest in vehicles capable of running with little gasoline.

Ford Chief Executive Alan Mulally and John Bryson, chief executive of Edison International, unveiled plans for the alliance at Edison International's headquarters in suburban Los Angeles Monday.

Mulally said Monday he expects the company to sell plug-in hybrids in five to 10 years.

"Within five to 10 years we will start to see this technology in our hands," Mulally on the sidelines of a press event to announce an alliance between Ford and utility Southern California Edison to test 20 rechargeable electric vehicles.

When asked if that meant plug-in hybrids would be available on showroom floors, Mulally said, "Yes. Sure."

Mulally said the rollout of Ford plug-in hybrids is dependent on advancements to lithium ion batteries that will be charged by the car's owners using regular household electrical outlets.

He declined to give a more precise production target, saying: "I can't go further than that. We will know a lot more in the next few years."

The comments were the first time Ford has offered a timeline for producing plug-in hybrids.

Under the research partnership, researchers from Southern California Edison and Ford will work together in "real world" testing of up to 20 plug-in hybrid vehicles, Ford spokesman John Clinard said.

Ford said it would provide the utility company with a fleet of 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid sport utility vehicles that would be benchmarked for performance.

The Escape Hybrids would then be engineered by Ford in cooperation with a battery company partner yet to be named to make the vehicle capable of being plugged in.

Like other gasoline-electric hybrid vehicles currently on the market, the Ford Escape Hybrid's batteries are charged by the SUV's gasoline engine as well as by from energy captured during braking.

Plug-in hybrids can also charge their batteries by plugging into an electrical outlet. That could allow them to make little or no use of gasoline power several miles after batteries were fully charged.

The No. 2 U.S. automaker, which lost $12.6 billion last year, became the first U.S. car maker to introduce a gasoline-electric hybrid vehicle - the Escape - in 2004.

Faced with declining U.S. market share, Ford later backed off ambitious sales targets for hybrids and was criticized by environmental advocates for having lost momentum in the race to develop alternatives to combustion engines.

Ford's move to test plug-in hybrids was welcomed by environmental groups, which have often targeted the automaker for its poor fuel economy record.

"Ford, a company that was previously dead last in fleet-wide fuel efficiency for all major automakers, appears to be turning a corner with this announcement," environmental group Friends of the Earth regional policy director Danielle Fugere said in a statement.

Environmental advocates, particularly in California, have been pressing automakers to roll out plug-in vehicles capable of running solely on electricity for short distances and recharging at a standard electric outlet.

"Consumers have been waiting a long time for an automaker to offer the next generation of ultra-fuel-efficient, gasoline-optional cars," said environmental groups Rainforest Action Network and Global Exchange Campaign in response to Ford's announcement.

Ford will initially work exclusively with Southern California Electric to develop the testing procedures but did not rule out working with other partners in the future.

"As Ford's plug-in hybrid program grows, the automaker will look for broader participation as it develops a business model not just for Southern California, but potentially nationwide," Ford said in a statement.

Larger competitor General Motors Corp. has already begun development work this year on its own plug-in hybrid car. GM showed off a concept version of the Chevrolet Volt in January and has signed contracts with two battery companies to research batteries for a possible production version.

Electric utility Southern California Edison serves about 5 million electricity customers in the Los Angeles region and parts of California's coast and Central Valley. It is a subsidiary of Edison International.

Carmakers offered big June discounts

Big Three alone spent a combined $2.6B on sales incentives in the past month, according to industry tracking service.

Automakers deepened the discounts and rebates on offers to U.S. consumers in June from a month earlier, adding incentives to slow-selling minivans and trucks, industry tracking service Edmunds.com said Tuesday.

Edmunds estimated the three Detroit-based automakers spent a combined $2.6 billion on sales incentives in the past month, while Japanese automakers spent $823 million.

All of the six leading automakers offered bigger discounts in June than they had in May with the exception of General Motors Corp., Edmunds said.

In a significant departure from usual practice, the three leading Japanese automakers all stepped up their discounting in the face of slack demand, Edmunds said.

"The competitiveness of the marketplace seems to be catching up with the Japanese heavyweights," Edmunds analyst Jesse Toprak said in a statement.

Toyota Motor Corp. announced in mid-June that it had begun offering rebates of up to $3,500 or interest-free loans for five years on its all-new Tundra pickup truck.

Edmunds estimated that Toyota's average incentive was $1,308 per vehicle in June, up from $1,128 in May.

Chrysler, which has been offering deals for months to support sales of its aging minivan and truck line-ups, had the industry's highest incentives at $3,962 per vehicle in June, up from $3,831 in May, Edmunds said.

Auto sales incentives are widely tracked by analysts as an indication of the relative profitability of competing automakers and the pressure that they face to move inventory.

Automakers do not typically disclose how much they spend on incentives, which can include concessional financing, cash rebates or additional payments to dealers.

Both Ford Motor Co. and GM rolled out end-June summer sales campaigns featuring interest-free financing on a range of vehicles aimed at boosting sales results.

Edmunds estimated that Ford's average incentive spending rose to $3,187 in June from $2,942 in May.

Both GM and Ford headed into the year with a strategy of throttling back on incentive spending as part of a strategy to move away from the kind of blowout sales and volatile results that dogged their results earlier this decade.

Rounding out the six major automakers, Edmunds estimated that Honda Motor Co. had spent an average of $1,397 on incentives in June, from $1,300 in May.

It estimated average incentive spending for Nissan Motor Co. at $2,218, from $1,943 in May.

By segment, the biggest deals were on minivans, which carried an average discount of $3,900, and full-size trucks, which had an average incentive of $3,864, Edmunds said.

Ferrari sets new Guinness World Record

Ferrari and the Ferrari Owners Club GB joined forces at Silverstone on Saturday 9 June, 2007, to set an incredible new Guinness World Record for the ‘Largest Parade of Ferrari Cars’, with an astonishing parade of 385 Ferrari cars, more than triple the previous record.

With road and race cars from every decade of the Prancing Horse’s proud and unique heritage, Ferrari owners from the UK and all over the world joined together to create an amazing spectacle to celebrate Ferrari’s 60th Anniversary and the Ferrari Owners Club GB’s 40th Anniversary.

With several rare and extremely valuable cars in the Guinness World Record parade, ranging from a 250 California Spider and a 275 GTB/C through to the ultra-desirable 250GTO and the ultra-exclusive FXX, as well as several examples of Ferrari’s iconic supercars, the F40, F50 and Enzo, a conservative estimate of the value of the cars in the parade on Saturday would be in excess of £60 million – a perfect number to mark the company’s anniversary year.

Massimo Fedeli, Managing Director of Ferrari GB Ltd, said: “What an amazing sight… We are proud to have the support of so many Ferrari owners today in setting a new Guinness World Record. We would like to express our sincere thanks to the Owners Club, our Sponsors and everyone who has been working behind the scenes for months to achieve this fantastic record.”

Peter Everingham, Secretary of the Ferrari Owners Club GB, was equally effusive: “I’m so proud to have been asked by Ferrari to help set a new Guinness World Record. What our members achieved here today on the Club’s 40th Anniversary is quite remarkable – with over 1000 Ferrari cars from every era here this weekend. We have so many enthusiastic owners, and I want to thank them for their support as we couldn’t have achieved this without them. I’m sure this one will take some beating.”

In order to comply with the Guinness World Record’s rules for such an attempt, the cars must all travel over a minimum 2 mile distance, no more than two car lengths apart, and must be counted at the beginning and the end of the parade. With a starting grid of Ferrari cars stretching from Becketts all the way to Copse on the Silverstone Circuit, the cars completed one full lap and covered a distance of 3 miles, driving two abreast around the entire circuit.

At the head of the parade was a 599 GTB Fiorano driven by Bruno Senna, nephew of three-time World Champion Ayrton Senna, driving in the Ferrari Challenge as a guest driver this weekend, and a specially-liveried 612 Scaglietti which was driven by PC Paul Atkin who recently joined the Ferrari 60 Relay as it toured around the UK. Behind the lead cars were a fleet of Fiorano Ferrari F430 cars driven by Ferrari GB’s VIP guests and sponsors who all had the unique opportunity to participate in setting a new Guinness World Record. Then came the extensive stable of Prancing Horses from the Ferrari Owners Club GB which made up the bulk of the 385 cars on track on Saturday.

After double-checking her count, both at the start and the end of the parade, Nadine Causey, Adjudicator for the Guinness World Record, presented Massimo Fedeli and Peter Everingham with a Certificate to mark the occasion.

Ferrari’s 60th Anniversary worldwide celebrations culminate on 23 June when the Ferrari 60 Relay baton, which has been carried around the world by enthusiastic Ferrari owners from every country, arrives in Maranello, Italy, the historical and present home of the Prancing Horse.

Happy Birthday to Mazda's Rotary Engine

Say a high-pitched, frenzied 'happy birthday' to Mazda's rotary engine, which has just turned 40 years old.

Far from drooling into middle age, the rotary engine remains a seriously clever bit of kit.

First introduced in 1967 in the Mazda Cosmo Sport, which looks like it should have had a starring role in Thunderbirds, the rotary engine has had much success since.

In 1991, Mazda used a rotary engine to claim victory at Le Mans, making it the only Japanese manufacturer to win the 24 hours race.

And now we have the very cool - if not so very economical - Mazda RX-8.

Here's to another 40 years.

The BMW Hydrogen 7

Clean Energy’ comes to the UK next week with the arrival of eight BMW Hydrogen 7 cars.

The virtually emissions-free luxury saloons form part of a total fleet of 100 Hydrogen 7 models that are a major landmark in BMW’s CleanEnergy programme: for the first time, Hydrogen 7 models have been produced on the ‘standard’ 7 Series production line and will be used in normal day-to-day driving in the UK.
Jim O’Donnell, BMW UK’s managing director, summed up this important step in BMW’s history: “The arrival of our Hydrogen 7 cars could not have come at a better time. Politicians, business leaders, the media and consumers are engaged in healthy debate on the future of energy supply and use. Meanwhile, the automotive industry is committed to cleaner motoring, with a host of possible solutions available today and being developed for the mid- and long-term. BMW is at the core of the future of motoring with tremendous developments in petrol and diesel engines, hybrid powertrains and hydrogen technologies.

“Our efficient dynamics programme has introduced energy-saving technologies that break through the 60 miles per gallon and one hundred and twenty grams per kilometre CO2 barriers, our new diesels are cleaner and greener than many of today’s hybrids, yet power and performance in all of our cars has improved. Clean, green motoring can also be engaging and dynamic, and the new BMW Hydrogen 7 models epitomise that philosophy,” O’Donnell concluded.

The fleet of liquid hydrogen powered cars is set to continue its rigorous programme of driving activities on UK roads. They will be in active service as support vehicles at a number of high profile events over the summer as well as transporting key participants at industrial, business and political conferences. A select group of high-profile VIP users will also take delivery of a car for short periods of time in order to experience the ‘normality’ of emissions-free motoring.

Uwe Ellinghaus, BMW UK’s marketing director clarified the importance of these hydrogen cars: “The age-old chicken-and-egg debate has now been resolved. BMW can produce hydrogen-powered cars on the production line and the time is right to engage with business leaders and politicians in order to progress the development of a hydrogen highway – the fueling and infrastructure requirements that make hydrogen a viable fuel for the consumer.

“We hope that experiencing these cars in normal driving situations will encourage people to join the debate. Without doubt, it will take many years for a suitable infrastructure to develop that makes hydrogen power an easy option for the consumer, but all indications are hydrogen is the only genuine long-term sustainable power source for cars. Public hydrogen filling stations have been developed in Germany and California, and the presence of BMW Hydrogen 7 cars in the UK will undoubtedly bring the future closer for British drivers,” Ellinghaus concluded.

The BMW Hydrogen 7 cars will be in action at a number of high-profile events starting on 22 May at the SMMT Test Day at Millbrook followed immediately afterwards when they will be used in the build up to the following week’s BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth. The Goodwood Festival of Speed and the Revolve alternative fuel Brighton to London drive event are also in the diary, as well as a number of conferences and environmental summits.

The BMW Hydrogen 7

The BMW Hydrogen 7 is based on the existing 7 Series and comes equipped with an internal combustion engine capable of running on hydrogen or petrol. In hydrogen mode the car emits nothing more than water vapour. Powered by a 260hp 12-cylinder engine, the Hydrogen 7 accelerates from zero to 62mph in 9.5 seconds before going on to an electronically limited 143mph top speed.

With its unique dual power engine, the driver of a Hydrogen 7 can switch quickly and conveniently from hydrogen to conventional petrol power at the press of a steering wheel-mounted button. The dual power technology means the car has a cruising range in excess of 125 miles in the hydrogen mode with a further 300 miles under petrol power. To make this possible the BMW Hydrogen 7 comes with a conventional 74-litre petrol tank and an additional hydrogen fuel tank holding up to 8kgs of liquid hydrogen. Such flexibility means the driver of a BMW Hydrogen 7 is able to use the vehicle at all times, even when the nearest hydrogen filling station is out of range. A filling station has been developed in Wembley to support BMW’s plans.

For undiluted driver enjoyment, engine power and torque in the Hydrogen 7 remain exactly the same regardless of which fuel is in current use. The driver can switch between the two without any effect on driving behaviour or performance. The car always gives priority to the use of hydrogen but, should this run out, it automatically switches to petrol power.

Unlike many previous hydrogen concept cars showcased by rival manufacturers the BMW Hydrogen 7 heralds a milestone in the history of the car. It is a full production ready vehicle, which has met all the stringent processes and final sign-off criteria that every current BMW model undergoes.

Why hydrogen?

The BMW Group has been committed to hydrogen technology as a means of reducing car emissions, in particular CO2 emissions, for over 20 years. When running in the hydrogen mode, the BMW Hydrogen 7 essentially emits nothing but water vapour. And, unlike fossil fuels and traditional petrol, hydrogen is available in virtually infinite supply when renewable energies such as solar, wind and wave power are used to produce the liquid hydrogen. Stored in a hi-tech tank which keeps the fuel at a pressure of 3-5 bar and a consistent temperature of –250C, liquid hydrogen offers significant advantages in energy density compared to other possible alternative fuel sources to enhance the cruising range of the car.

BMW continues to develop ultra efficient, yet very dynamic petrol engines that significantly reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Together with clean performance diesel cars and the technologically advanced hybrid systems currently under development, the BMW Group has a clear strategy for sustainable mobility with hydrogen as the ultimate goal.

Hands on the Wheel, Not on the BlackBerry Keys

Gov. Christine Gregoire signed the nation’s first law yesterday to ban “D.W.T.” — driving while texting with a cellphone, BlackBerry or other mobile device.

“Would you read a book or newspaper while you were driving? No!” Governor Gregoire said. “Then why would you text while driving?”

New Jersey is asking, too. The Legislature is considering a bill to outlaw D.W.T. (one of its sponsors, Paul D. Moriarty, admitted to sometimes using his BlackBerry while driving).

Some states already ban talking on a cellphone behind the wheel unless a headset is used, and Washington joined that group yesterday. But while reading or other distracting activities may not actually be illegal behind the wheel, more legislators seem to be worried about the danger of multitaskers tapping away without coming to a stop.

Mobile texters in the United States sent 158 billion messages last year, up 95 percent from 2005, according to industry statistics. There is no data on how many are typed or read by drivers, or how often the activity leads to collisions.

There are, though, documented cases of texting-related crashes, including one that prompted the law in Washington. A driver, apparently fixated on his BlackBerry, slammed his van into the car in front of him last December, causing a five-vehicle pileup, state officials said.

Not everyone advocates legislation. Jonathan Adkins, spokesman for the Governors Highway Safety Association, said that such laws, while well intended, were difficult for police to detect or enforce.

In Washington, the penalty for D.W.T. is a $101 fine (the proposed fine in New Jersey is $250). But the crime is a secondary offense, meaning a driver must be pulled over for some more grievous infraction.

“There’s a challenge for law enforcement,” Governor Gregoire said.

For some, the greater challenge may be to exercise impulse control on the road.

James Katz, director of the Center for Mobile Communications Studies at Rutgers University, says he doubts that many multitaskers will keep both hands on the wheel.

“Only the most angelic drivers,” he said, “will be able to resist the temptation.”

Ferrari Turns 60 With a Factory Sale

Ferrari cleans out its garage, so to speak, with an auction at its track near Maranello, Italy, on May 20. You can call it a factory sale or you can call it more grandly the Leggenda e Passione auction, as RM Auctions does.

A sale at the factory suggests surplus stacked on the loading dock or samples outside a Seventh Avenue loft. But when the factory is Ferrari’s, you don’t just drive up in your van. Ferrari allowed RM Auctions to handle the sale as part of the automaker’s 60th-anniversary celebration and to call attention to its new services of certifying and restoring vintage Ferraris.

The auction is the first sale in Europe for RM Auctions, the Canadian company that is collaborating on this sale with Sotheby’s.

The star of the event is a 1962 Ferrari 330 TRI/LM Testa Rossa, the only 4-liter and the last racing Testa Rossa by Ferrari. It was driven by the endurance racers Phil Hill and Olivier Gendebien.

The other stars of the sale are cars well known to Ferrari buffs, well traveled to shows and concours and often auctioned. Built in runs of 10 or a dozen, these are cars that buffs know by their chassis numbers.

Some are simply legendary pieces of engineering and design, like the most powerful Ferrari of its era, the 1953 Ferrari 340MM, with a 4.1-liter, 300-horsepower V-12. Some are famous for their drivers, like the 1970 Ferrari 512 S raced by Luigi Chinetti’s North American Racing Team twice at Sebring or the 1966 Ferrari Dino 206 SP. An alloy-body competition version of the short-wheelbase 1960 250 GT will also be offered, as well as a prototype of the F40 supercar.

Those with a more modest bidding budget will be drawn to the actual garage items — perhaps one of the more than 100 lots of racing memorabilia from the Ferrari archives — the real basement tapes.

The show is also aimed to highlight Ferrari Classiche, the specialist division established for documenting, authenticating and restoring vintage Ferraris. In less than a year, it has carried out nearly 500 certifications and restored 84 cars at its workshop. There could be a big headline from the sale. RM may earn bragging rights to the top price ever paid for an automobile sold at auction.

Create "green" car and win $10,000,000 from X Prize

The goal of the Automotive X PRIZE (AXP) is to inspire a new generation of super-efficient vehicles that help break our addiction to oil and stem the effects of climate change.

A multi-million dollar cash ($10,000,000) purse will be awarded to the teams that win a long-distance stage race for clean, production-capable vehicles that exceed 100 MPG equivalent (MPGe - Miles Per Gallon).

The AXP will encourage production-capable vehicles and products (not concept cars) through tough entrance requirements, judging criteria, and race courses that test and reward manufacturability, marketability, safety, durability and performance.

The AXP will devote considerable traditional and online media resources to public outreach, education, and involvement.

ENERGY AND EMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS
• Fuel economy (energy efficiency): at least 100 MPGe (miles per gallon)
• Total (wells-to-wheels) Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions expressed as equivalent grams of CO2 per mile: no more than 200 g/mi
• Criteria emissions: no worse than US EPA Tier II, bin 5 standards
• GHG emissions from vehicle production no worse than typical vehicles in production today

PRODUCTION CAPABLE VEHICLES
Our goals require that AXP vehicles be designed to reach the market. Accordingly, all vehicles entered into the AXP competition must be “production capable” as judged by the following criteria:
• Safety: Vehicles must be designed to meet safety regulations in the U.S. and other markets
• Cost: Vehicle cost at a production rate of 10,000 units per year must be within levels that the market is likely to bear
• Features: Vehicles must be desirable, addressing the most important features and factors consumers consider when purchasing an automobile
• Business Plan: Teams must articulate clear and viable business cases for bringing their vehicles to market

VEHICLE CLASSES
The AXP will offer two vehicle classes: Mainstream and Alternative. The classes have the same requirements for fuel economy and emissions, but different design constraints.
• Mainstream class – 4+ passenger vehicles with 4+ wheels that meet conventional expectations for size and capability
• Alternative class – An outlet for innovative ideas that push forward today's conventions about automotive transportation (2+ passengers, no requirement on number of wheels)
